Ancient Chinese Kung Fu Weapons

p161.jpg (13504 bytes)The history of ancient Chinese Weapons is  still being written by the latest archeological discovers unearthed in China.  What is currently known about Chinese ancient fighting weapons is that they were used over 6,000 years ago and that they were made of Stone, Jade , Wood, Bamboo, Bronze, Iron and meteorite metal. Many of  the shapes and functionality of these ancient weapons were inspired by the movements of animals and insects that were both mythological and real. The belief that Kung fu had it origins from India can be disputed by the artifact evidence uncovered from the soil of China. It is true that both Hinduism and Buddhism influenced the Chinese culture and the fighting arts, but the Chinese had mastered the art of combat with weapons long before these religious influences existed. The known history of Chinese fighting arts and the many types of  martial art's weapon styles, shapes, materials, and fabrication techniques evolved as they changed from one dynasty to the next. Within the period of one dynasty, which may have lasted for centuries, countless numbers of Chinese weapons and the their use evolved and influenced the development of future weapons. During the Warring States Period, with the advent of mass produced iron, many new types of weapons were created. To define the multitude of different types of Chinese weapons through out the ages is impossible, so as to concise the categories18 kinds of weapons including long, short, very short, soft and projectiles are covered here. A modern martial artist who would be proficient with all these types of ancient weapons would be called master of the "eighteen weapons martial techniques." The following list corresponds to a small sample of a variety of ancient weapons that are consistent with the 18 kinds of weapons currently practiced in modern material art.
