Ming Dynasty jade walking Dragon

Throughout Chinese history the people of China have worshiped the Dragon. In Chinese mythology the Dragon is the ruler of the Sky and of the Seas. The Chinese dragon, unlike its western cousin, is considered to be a benevolent creature, the custodian of rain, river, lakes and Seas. The Chinese Dragon is a harbinger of good fortune. In ancient Neolithic China the Dragon was the symbolic representation of the human soul. The famous jade artifacts of Dragon Embryo are evidence of this symbolic significance.

The mythological animals of the Chinese are many and often they are hybrid to become even more varied. In Chinese mythology the dragon is described as having the body of a snake, the face of a horse, antlers of the deer and claws of the eagle. The dragon has the beard of a goat and the scales of a fish. But where did such a creature come from? Is there any evidence to suggest such a creature ever existed?

A true Dragon's remains have never been found, although records of dragons in Chinese culture go back many thousands of years. Archeological evidence discovered at the excavation at Anyang  (ancient Shang Capital) revealed a full sized dinosaur skeleton. One can only assume that the Dragon may have been inspired not from pure imagination, but from the fossil remains of a great dinosaur.

The sex of the Dragon indicates its relationship with the cosmic duality forces of Yin and Yang. Often when two dragons are depicted for the purpose of expressing Yin and Yang, one dragon will have pointed ears (male) and the other dragon rounded ears (female). China is an ancient civilization that is without doubt the oldest continued civilization in the world. In ancient times Chinese understood essence of their life in accordance with the natural laws that governed  the eternal cosmic forces of Yin and Yang. The Dragon was the greatest of all creatures as it is able to rule both heaven and middle Kingdom (earth) and thus rule over the forces of Yin and Yang.

The Dragon throughout Chinese history has been a symbol used both for religious as well as military purposes, and like the Romans who  marched with the insignia of the Eagle, the Dragon in China was used as the military insignia. So powerful did the symbol of the dragon become that it was adopted by every Chinese Dynasty as the Imperial emblem.  From begining of the Chinese civilization  with the Yellow Emperor (Huang Di) all the way up until the last Dynasty of China (Ching Dynasty) the Dragon was the symbol of the Emperor.  As early as the Eastern Han Dynasty Dragon King Temple's were built where the Chinese farmers would pray for blessings of rain to bring good harvest ; all destiny was within the powerful claws  of the dragons, because these cosmic creatures controlled the rain.
